"Tree? What tree? Oh, you mean that abomination and insult to nature? Yeah I took it. You got a problem with that?" Scyther and Pinsir walk up to his side looking meaner than ever.

"Eh, if you want to call it that, then so be it. Personally I prefer Scarlet Sassafras, but then I have a weakness for alliteration." He turns to address your companions, "And you good miss, what name would you call the rage inducing red root that we now confront each other about?" He makes similar entreaties to the two large bugs and then turns back to you. "What then is your next move young master? Are we to do battle now or have a chat, or just go our separate ways. Considering we both took the time to lay ambushes, it is not clear that either of us has an advantage in combat and fighting fights I don't know I can win is never something I enjoy doing."

With a stern look on his face, Mike retorts, "If you don't want to fight a battle you can't win, I suggest you surrender now and come back to the city with us. It's your choice."

The man dressed in the wilderness clothes looks a bit nervous, but the man who had been speaking simply smiles. "I am not a man of violence, but neither am I a man that enjoys turning himself over to other's authority. I am sure this can be solved in a kinder, gentler fashion. What exactly is it that you are hoping to accomplish here? My job is to take some measurements of the soil around where the tree was planted and to investigate you if you still remained. Now you know what I want. Let me know what you want and we can work something out. I am sure you are uninterested in beating a man and his friend up for no reason."

The barbs in Mike's wrists drip with poison, as his blood pressure rises and his fists clench. "No reason? My bug buddies and I should destroy for no other reason than the plant causing all of those Pokemon attacking us. Not to metnion that you are harming POkemon in general. What I aim to accomplish here is to take you down and stop waht you're doing. No, I don't like hurting people, but sometimes I like to make an exception."

"OK, now we are getting somewhere. You don't like the red plant or its effects on the local wildlife. You want to prevent something like this from happening again. So lets start solutioning. First off, a few facts you should know before hand. One: My associate," he motions to the man dressed in wilderness clothes, "Is an outside contract man. He is not part of the organization that planted the sapling, nor is he in any way responsible for any of this. I hired him to track you guys from this location. Whatever problems you might have with me and my organization it has nothing to do with this man, who is a honest hardworking guy just doing his job. So whatever solution we come up with, whether it ends in violence or not, I would ask you to leave him out of this. Two: My self. While I have no personal interest in the red tree, I was aware of its use and its basic effects. I was sent to gather samples, and was originally sent here to plant it a while ago. I don't pretend to understand what it is my organization is actually looking to do with the red tree, but I like getting payed, so I am not going to take some moral stance against it. So here is my proposition. Together we walk back down to the site where it had been planted. I fill a vial with the soil around the location and hand it to my associate. You take me as a hostage and let him go to both turn over the vial and explain your views on the matter of the red plant. They will either send a negotiator that actually knows something about this whole business, or they will leave me to rot, in which case you have taken down at least one member of this group. I am a longstanding member of the group however, so I suspect they will be willing to at least send a negotiator."

Perplexed that this guy is actually just going to give himself up, Mike hesitates. He looks to Kate for her opinion. Assuming she nods in agreement, mike agrees to the terms of the red "R."

Kate nods and the four of you walk back together to the site of the red tree. Red R guy gathers a sample and hands it to the other guy, then takes off his belt and hands it to the guy as well. "I'd rather my pokemon are passed down to my kid if things go south here." he explains as his reasoning for handing the belt to his partner. The partner departs and the man looks to you and says, "Are we going to wait here for the negotiator or head somewhere else? Are you going to tie me up or something or just have me stand around? Whatever works for you is fine for me." After you have him secured however you decide to secure him, the guy says, "Any questions you want to throw my way while we wait, or do you mind if I take a nap? I'm not as young as I used to be."

Mike takes the man to the Police station and let them have him do whatever it is they need to do with him. Since he has already relinquished the fact that he knows nothing of the plant, Mike has no use for him, and heads back to Fuchsia's Gym to speak to the apothecary of his findings.

The police seem reluctant to take the guy on your word at first, but when Kate corroborates your story they seem to accept it as fact. As you are leaving the man with the r on his chest waves goodbye and gives you a merry "Best wishes!" You head back to the gym, and go to speak to the apothecary as quick as possible. Kate explains the basics of what had happened to the apothecary and he nods. "Not horrible decisions but perhaps not the best either. They have likely taken steps to hide their tracks and their base now, and it would have been better if the gym had the hostage instead of the police, but we work with what we can. I'm afraid there has not been time to do much more than confirm the effects that you mentioned and give a bit of an explanation as to the how. As you probably know, pokemon are unique in a large number of ways, not the least of which is their ability to gain energy and power through combat. It seems that what this plant causes changes the cells of the pokemon effected so that they no longer absorb the energy of the sun, but instead focus on absorbing the ambient energy given off in pokemon battles. If it was stable it could theoretically increased the rate at which a pokemon gains experience by five or ten, maybe even more, but as it is, the bodies cannot hold the energy and they destroy themselves. The dead tissues then erupts into the spores that can pass it on to others around it."

"I did not know the extent to which your Gym reaches, so for that I apologize. However, is there anyway to know how to counteract the negative impacts of the spores?"

"If someone would know, it would be Erica in Celedon City. Could you and Kate take a sample over to her gym and ask her to analyze it? I will continue to analyze this, but finding some way to negate it or counter it is likely beyond my ability."

"Very good, sir. If I could procure a vial of the spores, I'll head to Celadon straight away. U-um... where is Celadon?" Mike heads to Celadon... lol.

"There are a couple ways there. You can take a boat, you can head west of town and cycle almost all the way there on cycling road, or you can head east and then go and up north and then back west. There is no direct way if you head east but if you keep asking around you should make it easy."
