{Background}
Natasha O'Hara (née Gerburt) was born a healthy girl, youngest of three children and somewhat active, though she often has her nose buried in a book. That changed when the border town the Gerburt family lived in was attacked when she was eight years old. By the time the local reserves had pushed the Kaliastr invaders back over the border the family had shrunk, and Natasha's world view had been seriously and permanently changed. A canister of gas was tossed into the family's window while they slept. While it forced most of the family to flee the house, young Natasha was too frightened and instead curled up on a closet, resulting in extended exposure to the fumes which caused her eyes to burn and soon drugged her into unconsciousness.
Natasha's father and oldest sister were both killed in the combat, and her mother and brother moved the family away from their hometown, unable to deal with the memories of that place after their personal tragedy.
If only Natasha could leave the legacy of that night behind... The girl was left mostly blind, seeing the world as a series of blurred, coloured forms and having to learn how to navigate the world anew. To assist her youngest child to adapt with this new fact of live, Katrina Gerburt saved up for two years and finally managed to save up enough money to purchase a specially trained Eevee to serve as her daughter's eyes. From the moment they met, Natasha and Anastasia were inseparable, and with the Eevee's help, Natasha slowly began to regain her independence.
When she was barely sixteen years old, the latest wave of the War found them again. Pushing farther into Liacara, the Kaliastran forces attacked the Gerburts' new village. This time, though, Natasha had enough confidence and clarity of thought within the chaos to take hold of Anastasia's harness and flee into the wilderness. A Kalistran solder came upon her, holding a net in his hands and seemingly surprised to find a young woman in his path. He spoke softly to soothe Anastasia's frantic Growling and called over his shoulder to his fellows that he hadn't found anything of interest there, before he moved on.
When Natasha neared to the village several hours earlier, she smelt ash in the air. When she got to her home, no one was there. Her mother and brother had either fled or been slain.
If not for Anastasia, Natasha likely would have just remained where she had slumped to the ground and let herself fade away. Instead, she searched the village as well as she could and shared what she found with those who were hiding within the ruins. Then she set off in the direction of the Kaliastran border. Her intention wasn't clear, even to herself, but it was fortunate for her that the first person who crossed her path was the same soldier who had covered for her once before, and not one of his more bloodthirty fellows.
He held his net, still. It was empty, though if that was due to lack of luck or the fact that he had already handed over any captives was unknown.
He pulled her into more secluded surroundings, sat her down and handed her his canteen. When there were sounds nearby of movement, he either ignored them, or disappeared for a short time to deal with them. He would always return within a half-hour. They started talking from time to time, and Natasha felt her mind calming slightly as the shock of the past hours finally began to be processed by her mind.
The next morning, they parted ways after she promised that she would return home and stop her one-woman-one-Eevee invasion of Kaliastr.
When she got home, Natasha found her mother and brother, and several others in the village. Many of them were babbling about being captured and bound, and unexpectedly released by a soldier who was armed with nothing but a net and an apparently high enough rank to toss it around.
When she was seventeen years old, Natasha finally made a trip to Kaliastr. Their countries were at peace...for the time being, and she had been contacted by the soldier who had rescued her and tried to make right what his fellows had done. The fact that his unit had been sent in retaliation for a Liacaran raid on Kaliastr was not something he mentioned, but rather something Natasha had discovered on her own, wanting to find answers to that attack upon her calm.
Carl O'Hara was a complete gentleman during Natasha's visit, as well as the countless visits both of them made to the other's country. Then, nearly two years after their courtship began, rumours of a new conflict resurfaced. Not wanting to be separated from Natasha and seeking to keep her safe, Carl proposed marriage. The couple lived in Kaliastr during that War, but then moved to the newly rebuilt Liacaran town the Gerburts were living in.
Natasha and Carl O'Hara soon welcomed a little girl into the world; a red-faced little gem they named Ruby. When Ruby was eight years old--the same age her mother had been when she'd lost her sight--Carl decided to bring her to his homeland, to show her where he came from. They were supposed to be gone for a month, and he left his only Pokémon, the Ditto who had served as his net during the Wars, to keep Natasha and Anastasia company.
The most recent conflict started two weeks later. When the deadline for her family's return was past, and she realized the signs of a second child on the way, Natasha began to contact the Rangers about leaving Liacara. Unfortunately, red-tape over her dual-citizenship, dwindling food supplies, and the already long waiting lines to leave both countries, caused Natasha to loose the child.
That did appear to be the final factor to cause her application to finally be approved. Gathering what slight supplies remained to her (some money, a handful of PokéBalls the family kept nearby in case of a Wild's attack, and those wild Berries which Carl had been cultivating in the backyard and were not quite ripe enough to risk eating yet), Natasha made for the designated location.
Mirage, Carl's Ditto, Transformed into a pair of sunglasses, tinted just enough to shield her once violet and now nearly white irises from the view of the other refugees. She was not allowed to keep Anastasia with her, though, and the Eevee was recalled, her harness taking up room in the bag the twenty-eight year old woman kept clutched to her chest as she huddled in the corner nearest the restroom (making it easier for her to find her way there and back when she could no longer ignore the call of nature).
Frightened, more alone than she had ever felt in her life, Natasha made the voyage from her feuding countries, wondering if her husband and daughter were still alive, and set on reuniting them again, if they were.
